“AltaVista”这名称代表“从高处望下”，它于1995年由迪吉多公司（Digital Equipment Corporation）创立。由于使用了DEC Alpha服务器，因此起初其网址用了altavista.digital.com。
在该搜寻器出现以前，已有一家公司名为AltaVista，并使用了altavista.com此域名。结果，该搜寻器被迫使用较长的网址。至1998年，迪吉多公司被康柏电脑收购，并以300多万美元购买altavista.com网址。最后，卖家愿意卖出网址，并改名为PhotoLoft。AltaVista也需要把PhotoLoft公司的连结放在首页一段时间。

搜索规则：进行精确匹配查询时可使用“”号，但多数时候即使不用“”号，AltaVista也默认以精确匹配方式查询；不支持自动断词查询，但允许使用通配符“*”。区分字母大小写。当以大写字母查询时，默认为精确匹配，即查询结果不包括小写的关键词；而以小写字母查询时，则同时查找大写和小写。
搜索结果页面首先列出3个“Featured Sites”，来源自Overture的付费网站。随后如果有与查询条件相关的新闻，则列出数条新闻链接。接着是从自己数据库中查到的网页。某些时候，页面下端于“Extend Your Search”标题下还会再列出4个来自Overture的付费网站。
AltaVista的“蜘蛛”程序名为“Scooter”。AltaVista曾是登录速度最快的搜索引擎，一般从提交到被索引只需1-2周，最快的只需3天。目前由于经历改组，更新速度受到很大影响。

A History of Innovation
AltaVista, which means "a view fro m above," was inspired by the creation of big ideas fro m a team of experts with a fascination for keeping track of information. During the spring of 1995, scientists at Digital Equipment Corporation's Research lab in Palo Alto, CA, devised a way to store every word of every HTML page on the Internet in a fast, searchable index. This led to AltaVista's development of the first searchable, full-text database on the World Wide Web.
Other notable AltaVista inventions include the first-ever multi-lingual search capability on the Internet and the first search technology to support Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. We are proud of Babel Fish, the Web's first Internet machine translation service that can translate words, phrases or entire Web sites to and fro m English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Russian.
